Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM won five awards in the 19th annual College Broadcasters Incorporated’s National Student Production Awards Oct. 30.
The Rowan Report won first place for Best Audio Newscast. Produced by Rylee Meyer and Katie Francis, the show takes a look at the week’s most important news stories with the help of the Rowan Radio News Department.
The Rowan Report previously won second place for Best Newscast in the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts competition in February. It also received a Hermes Creative Award in April.
The win is a first for The Rowan Report. It marks the first time in station history the program won first place in a national competition.
The Ride at 5 netted first place in the Best Audio Station Promo category. The award-winning entry, created by Sean Kelly, promoted Rowan Radio’s newest program – a one-hour music show geared toward listeners on their ride home from work.
Rowan Radio grabbed second place for Best Station Imaging. The category identified the best student radio and TV stations which effectively branded and marketed their outlets on-air through a series of station liners and promotional announcements.
In addition, Joseph Scelza was honored for the digital short "The Perfect Cup," and Ben Lombardo, Bryce Tripodi and Zeid Aberra received Best Special Broadcast recognition for "9/12: Up from the Ashes."
“College Broadcasters Incorporated’s National Student Production Awards are one of the most prestigious media competitions for college students in the country,” said Keith Brand, chair of the Department of Radio, Television & Film within the Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts. “We are extremely proud that our students' work is on par with some of the best production schools in the country. Having this award on their resume can be important for students in landing their first job after graduation.”
College Broadcasters Incorporated recognizes the best in student media at its annual convention, which occurred online this year.
Rowan Radio has won 327 regional and national awards since 1993.
