Three WGLS-FM Programs Win Communicator Awards

Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM has won three programming and production awards in the 22nd annual Communicator Awards presented by the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts.

50 Years and Counting: An Oral History of WGLS-FM earned an Award of Distinction in the Production category. Produced by WGLS-FM Assistant Station Manager Leo Kirschner and narrated by Philadelphia radio veteran Angela Mason, the four-part documentary explored Rowan Radio's rich history that dates back to 1964.

The show included many interviews with station alumni, advisors, and administrators. It also featured several historical clips from the station’s audio archives.

Guns: Calibrate Your Thinking, a 30-minute documentary on gun control in the United States, received an Award of Distinction in Production. Rowan University students Sam Arcaini, Alyssa Compa, and Bob Duncan produced the piece that featured gun shop owners, police officers, professors, and gun instructors adding their takes on the controversial topic.

The Christmas Eve Early Bird Special claimed an Award of Distinction for audio programs. Hosted by WGLS-FM Station Manager Derek Jones and station alumni Rob Lightfoot and Mark Kasubinski, the program mixed the spirit of the season with pop culture discussions, special guests, and classic holiday music.

The Communicator Awards, held April 27, is an international competition that salutes the best in marketing and communications including audio, video, and interactive multimedia. This year’s contest fielded over 6,000 entries from around the world.

Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM has won 262 national and regional awards since 1993.
