GLASSBORO -- Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM brought home a national College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) award in the category of “Best Documentary” for “Heroin High,” a piece focusing on the drug culture in South Jersey schools. The award was presented during CBI’s annual conference in San Antonio on Nov. 2.
The 30-minute documentary was produced by Allie Volpe, a Sewell native who graduated in May with dual degrees in radio/television/film (RTF) and journalism, Joe Mineo, an RTF major from Sewell who also graduated in May, and Robert Zettlemoyer, a junior accounting major from Mt. Ephraim. “Heroin High” examined the rise of drug culture in schools, as well as the impact it has on students and their families.
The program beat out entries from Savannah College of Art & Design, Columbia College and The American University in Cairo in this category.
“Heroin High” has also been recognized by The Philadelphia Press Association, The Communicator Awards and The Garden State Journalist Association.
The program was produced in conjunction with WGLS Interim Station Manager Derek Jones’ Radio Production class and was one of three Rowan Radio productions to be nominated for a CBI award this year.
CBI is an organization representing students in radio, television, film and other forms of various media.
Since 1993, Rowan Radio has won 231 national and regional awards.
