GLASSBORO — Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM picked up two awards in the 2012 Festival of Media Arts competition presented by the Broadcast Education Association.
“Loco for Four Loko,” a documentary, won first place in the student audio division’s “Best Educational Program" category. The segment examined the dangers surrounding the beverage line Four Loko and its impact on college students.
The documentary was produced by 2011 radio/television/film graduates Ryan Spillman of Sewell, Michael Amato of Pennsauken and Jazmin Hooks of McGuire Air Force Base. The segment was a collaborative effort between Rowan Radio and the radio production course taught by Derek Jones, assistant station manager at WGLS-FM.
In the BEA’s student sports competition, Rowan junior Rob Cunningham placed second in the “Best Radio/TV Sports Event, Play-by-Play Talent” category. An RTF and journalism major from Egg Harbor Township, Cunningham was recognized for his call of the Rowan men’s soccer team’s dramatic victory over Richard Stockton College in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament.
The students will be recognized during the BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas in April.
Established in 1955, the BEA is the professional association for professors, industry professionals and graduate students who are interested in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises.
Since 1993, WGLS-FM has won 200 national and regional awards.
