Rowan University student projects earn accolades

GLASSBORO A radio documentary that focuses on the future of Rowan Boulevard won top honors in the Society of Professional Journalists Region 1 "Mark of Excellence" Awards.

"Rowan University Building a Boulevard" took first place in the Radio In-depth Reporting category of the regional SPJ competition. The segment will compete in the same category at the national SPJ competition in September.

"Building a Boulevard" was produced by Chris Capitanio of Glassboro, a junior Radio/Television/Film major with a concentration in Honors; Maya Carr of Camden, a junior RTF major with a minor in dance and James Bracciante of Mullica Hill, a junior RTF major with concentrations in Honors and new media communication.

Two other segments produced for Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM also took honors in the Mark of Excellence Awards.

In the Radio Sports Reporting category, "Rowan Sports Review" received second place. The show was produced by Adam Dobrowolski of Ewing, a senior journalism major with an Honors concentration, and Rob Cunningham of Egg Harbor, a sophomore journalism and RTF major.

WGLS-FM also took third place in the Radio In-depth Reporting category for "Facing Facebook." The documentary was produced by E.J. Campbell of South Amboy, a senior RTF major; Lindsay Ezykowich of Edison, a junior journalism major; and Matt Shanley of Brick, a senior journalism major.

"Building a Boulevard" and "Facing Facebook" were collaborative efforts between Rowan Radio and the radio production course taught by Derek Jones, assistant station manager at WGLS-FM.

The Mark of Excellence Awards, which honor achievements in print, broadcast and online journalism, received 4,000 entries this year. Rowan students competed against students at universities such as Harvard, New York University, Syracuse, the University of Pennsylvania and Vassar College.
