Rowan's WGLS-FM wins press awards

GLASSBORO -- Rowan University's student radio station, WGLS-FM, has won three major awards from the Philadelphia Press Association. The station won first place in the Radio Public Service category for its production of "Tobacco: Filtering Out The Truth." The documentary was also named the Grand Award Winner for Public Service in the Philadelphia Press Association's Annual Media Awards Competition.

Produced by WGLS-FM alumni Rob Lightfoot, Melissa Connell and Alisa Hogan in conjunction with the Rowan University Center for Addiction Studies,the three-part documentary examines the dangers of smoking, the current tobacco-prevention methods being used in New Jersey, and what college students are doing to counter tobacco industry marketing aimed at them. The program had already won an Award of Excellence from the Broadcast Education Association, first place in the National Headliner's competition, and a Communicator Crystal Award of Excellence.

WGLS-FM also won first place in the category of Best Radio Feature for the documentary "Childhood Memories: As Seen on TV," produced by students Kim Shipman and Kevin Fischer. The program examining early television programs in Philadelphia also won first place in the Philadelphia AIR Awards competition, second place in the annual Broadcast Education Association competition, and third place for best radio feature by the regional Society for Professional Journalists. "We are particularly proud of these awards since Rowan Radio was competing against all radio stations in the Delaware Valley area," said station General Manager Frank Hogan.

The awards will be presented at the Philadelphia Press Association's annual awards banquet in June.
