The word around campus radio station WGLS-FM seems to be change.
After changing formats this semester, an executive staff position was eliminated last Friday, prompting a student to quit the station.
Dave Bartiromo had his position as program director eliminated in order to get more people involved in the decision making process, said General Manager Frank Hogan. According to Hogan, Bartiromo was in charge of picking every song on the station.
“Instead of having one Saddam Hussein in charge more people now had a say in the station,” said Hogan.
Now, each department will be in charge of its own format. In essence, Hogan said there will be a bunch of program directors, and it would be like seven or eight “mini radio stations.”
Bartiromo lashed out at Hogan in an eight page letter. The letter was sent to several college administrators, including President Dr. Herman James, Communications Chairperson David Cromie, and Hogan.
When reached for comment, no one said that they had received the letter yet.
In the letter, Bartiromo paraphrased a conversation between himself and Hogan, saying that Hogan appointed Kim Stevens as Operations Director, and all that he had left was an air shift, meaning a radio show.
“I wanted to prove that as program director, I could do my part to take a format that I disagreed with and make it as successful as possible,” said Bartiromo.
“But, after Hogan took away the position that I worked so hard for, that I wanted to improve on, I felt there was no reason to stay at the station. Radio is what I want to do for a living and he took away the chance that I was given.”
