Adding to list of accomplishments, Rowan Radio honored by Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts

Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM received four Communicator Awards from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts May 2 for news and public affairs programming.

Mother’s Needs, a documentary about challenges like domestic abuse and financial stress experienced by some single mothers, received Awards of Excellence for programming and production.

Produced by Nicholas Iadonisi and Holly Johns, Mother’s Needs also earned national recognition from the Broadcast Education Association in February.

Living on the Frontlines, which highlighted the struggles of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, received an Award of Excellence for production. The piece was produced by Sam Whalen and was also honored by the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts this year.  

Mother’s Needs and Living on the Frontlines were created in a Rowan University radio production course taught by WGLS-FM Assistant Station Manager Leo Kirschner. 

Meanwhile, the Rowan Report Election Night Special won an Award of Excellence for production. Anchored by Rowan Radio News Director Allison Bruce, Carly Murray and Megan Steckler, the show provided live updates of key election night races including analysis and interviews regarding important issues impacting voters.

During the past year, Rowan Radio’s election coverage was nationally recognized in several competitions including with a first-place win for Best Special Event Coverage from the College Media Association.  

The 29th annual Communicator Awards, presented by the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts, recognizes excellence in communication.  

Rowan Radio has won more than 360 regional and national awards since 1993.
