A longtime leader in the civil rights movement, Kyles has been pastor of the Monumental Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1959. The last hour of Dr. King's life was spent with Kyles and Rev. Ralph Rev. Ralph Abernathy in his room at the Lorraine Motel.

He was the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Bond was elected to both houses of the Georgia Legislature, where he served a total of twenty years. He has been chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) since 1998.
