In honor of Women's History Month, congratulations are in order for Rowan Radio's weekly public affairs program "The Women's Room" for its big win of the National Gracie Allen Award.
A Gracie Allen Award is given to women in media by the American Women in Radio and Television, Inc. (AWRT). The national competition included candidates from major networks like CNN, CBS and ABC. This is the first time that Rowan Radio WGLS-FM has won such an award. "The Women's Room" program will receive the award in New York on June 19 at the National Gracie Awards Gala.
The winning show was an interview that the show's host, senior Kelly King, had with Roberta Obler in Sept. of 2005. Obler is a breast cancer survivor and a volunteer for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization dedicated to education and research of the causes, treatment and search for a cure of breast cancer. Throughout the show, King and Obler discussed Obler's experiences, as well as the importance of the early detection and prevention of breast cancer. AWRT is a nonprofit educational organization whose goal is to advance the impact of women in electronic media. The Gracie Awards are a tribute to Gracie Allen, who is best known for her work as a comedian and activist. She is considered to be a role model to all women in today's media and entertainment industry.
